Hayoung Choi, a young cellist with a South Korean background, was born in Bielefeld in 1998. She was taught by Hyong Won Chang and Myung-Wha Chung at the Korean National Institute for the Gifted in Arts in Korea and studied at the Purcell School of Music in Hertfordshire (England) with Alexander Boyarsky. 

She is First Prize Winner of the 2022 Queen Elisabeth Competition for Cello. She also won the First Prize and two special prizes at the 3rd Krzysztof Penderecki International Cello Competition in Poland 2018. 

As a soloist, Hayoung Choi has debuted with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra in 2021. Additionally,  she has performed with several other prestigious orchestras such as Kremerata Baltica Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra, Barcelona Chamber Orchestra, London Trinity Labans Conservatoire Orchestra, Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Sungnam Philharmonic Orchestra and Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Hayoung Choi performs on Giovanni Paolo Maggini, Brescia (c.1600) kindly loaned by Kumho Cultural Foundation and Asiana Airlines, Inc.

At Kronberg Academy Festival 2017 she was awarded the Leyda Ungerer Prize. In 2008, she was awarded the Landgrave of Hesse Prize at Kronberg Academy’s Cello Masterclasses. Since 2014 she has been studying at Kronberg Academy with Frans Helmerson. From 2018 to 2020 she has been studying there with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. These studies were funded by the Casals Scholarship. Since 2022, she is additionally studying in Madrid.
