Chamber Music Connects the World
The Chinese violist Wenting Kang, born in 1987 in Zhuzhou China, appeared as an “excellent violist” who “possesses a dark glowing sound” in New York Times after her performance in the Marlboro Music Festival tour performance at Carnegie Hall. Kang’s playing also has been described as “elegant, precise and not without expressive intensity” as well as “pure, muscular tone-passionate without ever losing a sense of control” in Boston Musical Intelligencer.
As a soloist, Westing Kang performed with Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra and Tokyo TOHO Gakuen Orchestra, and Boston Modern Orchestra Project. She has given solo performances in prestigious concert venues such as Jordan Hall in Boston, Kioi Hall and Ishibashi Memorial Hall in Tokyo.
Westing Kang was the recipient of the 1st Prize in the 2nd Tokyo International Viola Competition in 2012. Previous, she has won numerous prizes including the top prizes in the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante Competition at New England Conservatory, the 5th August Dombrovska International Competition, the Concerto Competition of the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, and the 1st China Viola Festival-National Viola Competition where she won additional awards for her performances of Concerto and Contemporary piece. In addition, she won the 3rd prize of the Johannes Brahms International Competition in 2010 as well as the Robertson prize at the Primrose International Viola Competition in 2011.
As an active chamber musician, Westing Kang has been invited to international music festivals such as Marlboro Music Festival, Steans Institute at Ravinia Festival, Yellow Barn Music Festival, Monadnock Festival in the US, Viola Space in Tokyo, and Chamber Music Connects the World at Kronberg. The renowned artists, whom she shared the stage with, include Kim Kashkashian, Nobuko Imai, Antoine Tamestit, Steven Isserlis, Christian Tetzlaff, Lucy Chapman, Donald Palma, Paul Katz, Peter Wiley and Marcy Rosen.
She holds her Master of Music degree and Graduate Diploma from New England Conservatory working with Kim Kashkashian and Garth Knox. She has also worked as exchanged student with renowned violinists Donald Weilerstein and Miriam Fried at NEC.
From 2013 to 2015 she studied at Kronberg Academy with Nobuko Imai.
