Marc Ziethen

Born in Bergheim (near Cologne, Germany), Marc Ziethen initially studied school music and philosophy in Cologne, later receiving tuition in cello at the universities of music in Cologne and Detmold (with Armin Fromm, Professor Ingrid Frohmüller-Seidel and Elisabeth Fürniss). He successfully completed his studies with his first state examination in music and philosophy, a Diplom degree in instrumental tuition and his graduate recital.

He has received additional artistic inspiration from masterclasses with tutors including Professor Irene Güdel, Professor Claus Kanngießer and Professor Martin Ostertag.

Ziethen has primarily gained orchestral experience with ensembles such as the RIAS Jugendorchester Berlin, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and the Sinfonieorchester Münster/Westfalen.

He began teaching cello, chamber music and music theory at various music schools in the Münster and Ems area during his studies.

From 2006 to 2008, he completed his teacher training at the teacher training college in Oberursel, successfully passing his second state examination. Since then he has taught music, ethics and philosophy at the Gymnasium Oberursel school in the state of Hesse.

Here he founded the “Gymnasium Oberursel Chamber Orchestra” in 2012, from which several professional musicians have emanated. Together with the orchestra, he has been a guest performer at the Berlin Philharmonie on multiple occasions and has won prizes in competitions such as the Mendelssohn-Wettbewerb Rhein Main. In addition, Marc Ziethen directs the musical project at Gymnasium Oberursel, coordinating productions and regularly preparing arrangements for unusual ensemble configurations.
